Clean Green environmentally friendly Rimu lodge

At Rimu lodge we endeavour to run the lodge with the environment top of mind. Where at all possible we recycle, source locally and keep our carbon footprint as small as possible.

I am proud to call New Zealand home and represent this diverse area, with such immense natural beauty and fascinating rich history. To that end it is our responsibility to nurture and care for the environment by choosing companies which have the same ideals. Small changes can make a difference, here are some of the initiatives I have included since taking over the running of Rimu lodge.

·        We did away with small single use bottles of shampoo conditioner in favour of refillable bottles of a New Zealand made product which is made by a company which also keeps the environment in mind.

 ·        We collect rain water which is stored and filtered through a UV filtration system then again through a charcoal filter. It tastes fantastic and is lovely for your hair washing.

 ·        Freshly picked flowers are an important part of the of Rimu lodge, since I have been at the lodge I created a flower picking garden, and I have also planted over a thousand bulbs, of lilies and daffodils, iris and tulips for the Spring vases.

 ·        We grow all our berries for the lodge breakfast throughout Summer, there are beds of strawberries, and trees of blueberries. Other fruit which is grown on the property is used in fruit jams for the tables. Herbs for the breakfast and garnishes are all grown in the lodge gardens.

 ·        Our wood fires use local timber collected from within the Hokitika area.

 ·        Whilst it would be ideal to use chemical free cleaning products for the environment, to  maintain the highest levels of hygiene practices, which Covid has taught us are fundamental to maintaining good health, I will not compromise these essential cleaning standards.

 ·        The spinach for the eggs benedict is produced by a local hydroponic grower. Eggs are all from local people who have free range chickens, so the eggs are rich in colour and flavour from happy chickens.

 ·        Our kitchen food scraps go to feed some of the local chickens and the green waste including the eggs shells go onto the compost for feeding plants on the property.

 ·        Continuous planting and regeneration of native bush on the property ensure our carbon footprint is minimal.

This piece of paradise deserves to be cared for and nurtured and I am proud to call Hokitika home and I will do my utmost to care and protect this area through our actions at Rimu lodge.
In 2010 we were awarded the Qualmark responsible tourism's Silver for excellent sustainability within our business.
